Palma de Mallorca was founded as a Roman settlement in 123 BC. The Romans also founded the town of Pollentia in the bay of Alcudia.

Some 500 years later the Roman influence was substituted by Byzantines, Goth and Vandals.

In the year 707 a Muslim fleet landed on Mallorca and a long period under Muslim dominance had started. From 849 the island came under the Caliph of Cordoba and a period of prosperity came to the island.

The Muslim influence lasted until the year 1229, when the island was conquered by James I of Aragon. The Mallorca kingdom had been created. James I to James IV are called the kings of Mallorca . This lasted until 1349 where Mallorca was conquered by the king of Aragon, and later as Spain became a kingdom of its own, Mallorca was integrated as a part of this.

During the years Palma de Mallorca had a position as an important trading post. During the 13 th century more than 300 cargo vessels were registered in the Port of Palma.

It was a period also of fighting between the local families and natural disasters.

In 1490 members of 2 leading families started a fight in the San Francisco church, leaving many killed and wounded.

In 1403 the river "La Riera" busted its banks and 4000 people drowned. The river was passing through the town where you find Via Roma and Borne.

From 1500 to 1700 the city walls were constructed to protect against invading pirates. From 1900 the walls started to be demolished and Palma de Mallorca started to look like the city as we know it today.

From around 1950 the tourist industry started to change the life in Palma de Mallorca.
